CONTEXT:
[Speaker 1] - In your book we learn that first humans were not vegetarians nor carnivores, but scavengers, like hyenas and vultures. How do we know that and how do we can explain it?
[Speaker 2] - The earliest humans weren’t exactly scavengers – they were omnivores. Scavenging, however, was their first unique niche. Humans ate fruits, tubers, insects and small animals – but so did many other animals. What was special about humans is that they used stone tools to crack open bones and eat the marrow inside them.
'Scavenger' is translated by 'charognard'. However, what about 'scavenging' as a noun? All I seem to find is 'cueillette', which doesn't seem to fit.
Any suggestions?

"Au début, ses outils n’étaient pas des armes pour la chasse, ils n’ont été utilisés que pour découper les carcasses des animaux tués par des prédateurs et en tirer ce qui était mangeable.
