use-by date; expiry date

My personal preference is for "use-by date.

You could also say \"best-before date\". All of these are equally valid options, as is \"expiration date\", although to me, \"use-by date\" or \"best-before date\" sound best.

PS: Eurodicautom confirms most of these for \"vencimiento\".

\"Within the use-by date\" is how I would translate this whole phrase.

\"Within the use-by date\" is also very commonly used, as you\'ll see if you do a search on it.

Eg:

\"Buy food from clean and well managed shops
Check the \"use by\" dates on food. If you haven\'t eaten food by the \"use by\" date, throw it away
Avoid food which is sold loose and doesn\'t require cooking, for example hams, coleslaw and ready-to-eat salads. These carry higher risk of infection.
Choose pre-packed food from the chilled cabinet
Wash all salad vegetables thoroughly before eating them
Take chilled or frozen foods home as fast as possible. Store them straight away in the refrigerator or freezer. They mustn\'t be allowed to become warm or thaw\"

Or try this:

\"This product is sold in refrigerated conditions, below 5oC. The product has a \'display until\' and \'use-by\' date marks. The \'display until\' date mark is for Sainsbury\'s stores. The \'use-by\' date mark is given to perishable foods, and is intended for consumers. The \'life\' given to a product is based on microbiological, chemical and sensory criteria and the product must not be eaten after this date.

After purchase, consumers should refrigerate the product as soon as possible, use within the \'use-by\' date mark and once opened consume within 3 days (as long as this is within the use by date).\"

Best before date (an alternative for retail)

The options above are correct for wholesale purposes (I worked in a wholesale company for a couple of years).

Just for information purposes, when the product actually gets shipped to the stores, the "best before date" is widely used in North America to let the consumer know when the product expires (although the product is usually fine for a few days after that date).

I thought I would just add this comment for information purposes.
