English term

the lock on this thing

English to Russian Art/Literary
Iґm afraid I donґt quite get the meaning :-( Could anybody explain me what the lock could mean in the following context:

Barry is parking his Panda and having a not-so-pleasant conversation with his wife:

I said, she repeated, blot-kissing her own mouth, you always say that when you are parking.
Yes, well. Itґs the LOCK on this thing. Like a tank.

Thanks in advance.

ruchnoi tormoz - parking brake

I think he is talking about parking using a standard transmission and the lock is on the "ruchnoi tormoz" (parking brake) that you are supposed to use when you park. Sometimes they are very stubborn and it is hard to use them. I have done it a couple of times. Thank God I have automatic transmission on my car now.
Kate.

В том-то и загвоздка

I think the phrase means 'That's what's wrong'. It's not a door lock or anything of the sort. The conversation is not pleasant, so his wife has started her usual boring talk on an ever-bothering thing he is used to. Anyway, the context is not enough. I would rather have a bit of their relationship history and what they have been talking or doing up to the moment of the conversation, before I could tell exactly what it means.
I am glad if it helped.

И правда, в панде пульт управления, как в танке.

Panda car is chiefly British for a police cruiser. ETYMOLOGY: From a similarity of color tone distribution.
(The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition.2000.)
The lock has also a meaning "the mechanism for exploding the charge or cartridge of a firearm, т.е. пульт управления, как в танке (Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary).
Summing up: И правда, здесь пульт управления, как в танке.
(Судя по всему, из-за этого у Барри были трудности с парковкой.)

А ручник здесь слишком надежный. Как на танке.

А ручник здесь слишком надежный. Как на танке.

A ruchnik zdes' slishkom nadezhniy. Kak na tanke.

Clearly, Barry's phrase is about the parking brake ('ruchnoy tormoz') on a car with stick transmission.
