Italian term

bisarni e piagge

Italian to English Science Geography
Description of a painting (which I do not have) showing "Divagazioni del fiume che danno vita a bisarni e piagge"
I need help on both terms (so will post a request for piagge separately). As we are talking Tuscany, could be a local term perhaps? One might be an oxbow lake or similar?

Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) Mar 22, 2010:
River bifurcations and banks Sorry I do not know how to make the complete translation appear, but as said, bisarni appeared more than once in the text and I used bifurcations and secondary river beds. Flood plain and alluvial channels would certainly work equally well in slightly different contexts. Thanks again to all.

river bifurcations

This is only a translation help, as I see that on this institutional website "bisarni" are river bifurcations, locally defined "bisarni".

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "In the end I used both Alessandro's 'bifurcations' and Lucrezia's (secondary) 'river beds' - I am sorry I could not give everyone who answered points, as all were very pertinent!"

flood plains

sono alvei di straripamento, o doppi alvei
si creano per via di alluvioni o variazioni nella portata dei corsi d'acqua
'bisarni' era anticamente usato in toscana, credo inr elazione al fatto che vi scorra l'Arno

river beds

bisarni = alvei = river beds

L'Arno spagliavo le sue acque e formava dei lunghi e larghi guadi e dei doppi alvei o bisarni.
