French term

molécules de lutte

French to English Science Medical: Pharmaceuticals environment & ecology
Part of a text talking about environmental damage causing ecological and health problems: it mentions the emergence of diseases that are resistant to "molécules de lutte", which from my research I would have been tempted to render simply as "drugs", but it then refers to antibiotics and pesticides - and I don't think "pesticides" can be termed "drugs":

"les dernières décades ont vu l'émergence ou la réémergence de maladies infectieuses et de résistances aux *molécules de lutte* (pesticides, antibiotiques...)".

So I wanted to put "drugs and substances used to combat them", tho' a bit long-winded. But it is then used again:

"Ces perturbations environnementales touchent l'ensemble du globe : modification et destruction des habitats, intensification des modes d'élevage et de culture, mondialisation des échanges, changements climatiques, pollutions, usages massifs de *molécules de lutte*."

I'm not sure if there is a set translation for this. Could I use "drugs and chemicals" maybe? Any help much appreciated!

drugs and other disease-control agents

Just an idea. Lutte in a disease context is often translated as prevention and control. I was hoping that "other disease-control agents" would cover fungi, parasites, vectors, bacteria and viruses.
Peer comment(s):

agree CFournier : oui, ici lutte = control, en effet (comme dans "pest control" = lutte antiparasitaire)

Note from asker:
Thanks for your suggestion Liz; I did want a term other than "drugs" as I think it is too limiting here, on its own anyway.

chemicals

This is a bit of a "free" translation, but I think it might work, perhaps in combination with your initial idea of drugs: drugs and chemicals.

Thanks Wendy, another helpful suggestion.

chemical combatants

I think you are right about not referring to "drugs" alone. The overuse and misuse of pesticides has also led to increased resistance among insects. I don't think they are just talking about viruses and bacteria here, but physical bugs too.
Example sentence:

With the only effective chemical combatant of the tiny brown bloodsuckers (DDT) banned since 1972 after being deemed too toxic, the critters have become even more resilient and sparked an unprecedented multi-city outbreak this year.

We used Prolixin at the time, which was thought to be an effective chemical combatant for clinical depression.

Thanks for your suggestion Sarah, also helpful.

chemically active substances

It is a term commonly used in this context. See references. A google search of 'chemically active substances' in combination with 'environment' will give you lots of hits.
Note from asker:
Thanks Anna, this could have been another option, but I preferred keeping a sense of "lutte" with the "disease-control" solution.
