This is from the result of a study for a pharmaceutical, talking about response to treatment.

Dans les patients répondeurs entre 50 et 99%, on en relève X qui échappent totalement et X partiellement.

I know that 'echapper' means fail the treatment, but I am not sure how to phrase this: 'X fail totally and X partially?', or the 'the treatment failed totally in X and partially in X'??

Sorry, the drug is to treat psoriasis and the 55 and 99% refers to the PASI score. Sentence before: 'Parmi les 19 patients ayant atteint le PASI 100, 4 ont totalement échappé ensuite, et 6 partiellement.
9 ont gardé une réponse complète.' Hope that clarifies things.

In that case, échappement in the sense of "treatment resistance". Important to know what disease to decide which term is appropriate.

@SJLD Doesn't it sound like échapper in the sense of they were initially responders but later a subset stopped responding to the treatment?

we need to know a little more What is the disease? What is the treatment? (generic name of drug will do). What confuses me is how can total non-responders be a subset of "patients répondeurs entre 50 et 99%"? Can you give us the sentence(s) before?

I would not try to propose an answer as I work from English to French, but I often find 'escape (of a drug)', which is the literal translation of 'échapper/échappement'

I suppose it would depend on the disease and how they are measuring response, but it may be appropriate to talk about responders who subsequently undergo partial or complete relapse.
