German term
Fahnen
German to English
Science
Agriculture
Unlikely to be 'flags'. Some kind of agricultural/horticultural term? Perhaps 'fronds'?

leaves/stalk tops/trash
The technical term is trash, but I'm not sure that would work in this context!
"In the [sugar cane] burning process, the field is set fire to and the leaves are burned off the stalks. About 80% of the “trash,” including straw, the tops, and green and dry leaves, are burned off. These components constitute about 25% of the entire sugar cane stalk. The burning kills microorganisms and burns the trash, both of which keep the soil rich when left in the fields."
Duden gives "vexillum" as one meaning of Fahne - this is the upper petal of a papilionaceous plant. Also not appropriate here, but the idea is similar.

Duden definition
In my Duden for Fahne there is the following entry
Maybe that helps?
