German term

Spitzmaulaal

German to English Science Zoology Fishes
Hi,

Would anyone have an idea as to how Spitzmaulaal would translate into English?

I have done some extensive searching myself and what I've found is "long-nosed eel", but I am still not 100% sure, since, according to my client, the Spitzkopfaal is a freshwater eel and the entry I've found for long-nosed eel below seems to suggest it is a saltwater type

Would anyone know or have a better idea?

Thank you

I meant to say "Spitzmaul" not Spitzkopf Sorry

In fact, I've just noticed that you've also used "Spitzkopf" in your question.
philgoddard Jul 31, 2013:
Spitzkopf gets far more hits than Spitzmaul, and I think this may be a narrow-headed eel. Is it the European eel, Anguilla anguilla? This is bimorphic, meaning that some have wide heads and some have narrow, within the same species. Could we have the context, please?

sharp-nosed eel

Maybe.

Eels are also sometimes described as broadnosed or sharpnosed; the broadnosed eel is one that has excessively developed jaw muscles as a result of voracious feeding, and is almost always a female.

zigzag eel

I found this, if indeed it is Mastacembelus Circumcinctus or else "half banded spiny eel"
