"a conscious decision to reverse expectations and by doing so warn those familiar with the sequencing of the novels that the gloves, if not off, were going to be loaded with the odd horseshoe …"
Vd. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=bt0PEsYjj5IC&pg=PA172&lp...
Entendo que a primeira parte da frase sugere a expressão "gloves are off": There is going to be a serious dispute (http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/gloves are off)

: Right, Robert and Nick. Just a figurative way of saying the guy was cheating.

O produtor diz, logo antes: "There was a hard core [of fans] who were not going to be happy with anything we did", porque eles não aceitavam a menor mudança, eram "ortodoxos".
Porém, "Dirk decided to take inventive steps to give the final eight episodes more of a strident story arc".
Muito obrigada, meus caros colegas! :)
Gloves are off -> means we are going to "play" rough
Horseshoe in the gloves (or a roll of quarters) - intended to hurt the opponent badly
You need to know what "the gloves are off" also means to understand the whole phrase.

As a non-native speaker of Pt I would NEVER presume to offer a suggestion for such an idiomatic term!
And then someone can write a Portuguese answer!
Cartoons, Popeye, Comic strips all feature BOXING CHEATS who use a horseshoe in the boxing gloves to give them an unfair advantage.
It is a stock cheat in boxing for one to conceal something hard and heavy in one's glove. Classically done with a horseshoe.
A character employing this tactic in non-professional contexts is probably a Combat Pragmatist.
Interestingly, the point of a boxing glove is not to dampen the blow, it's to protect the hand. Hiding a horseshoe (or similarly hard things) in your boxing glove would be just as likely to damage your fingers as your opponent's face. This simply makes it an Acceptable Break from Reality.
