German term

keltern

German to English Science Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
I know keltern means to press but what is the difference between "Wein keltern" und "Wein produzieren"
Is the term "vinificate" commonly used in English?

Sentence: "Wir produzieren einen frischen Goldmuskateller und keltern einen Blauburgunder-Rosé"

Discussion

Lesley Robertson MA, Dip Trans IoLET (asker) Jan 26, 2022:
although this text is from a wine-producing estate with hotel that makes wine now - I'm sure they don't tread the grapes!
Eleanore Strauss Jan 26, 2022:
Keltern refers to wine and actually means press Press or winepress... in this context it's also treading, which was the traditional way to produce wine

Example sentence:

We grow Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot at our Chestnut Garth Vineyard and source Sauvignon Blanc grapes from a neighbouring vineyard

agree Bourth : Ah! "grapes from a neighbouring vineyard"

agree Steffen Walter : Vermutlich wollten sie einfach die Wiederholung des Verbs "produzieren" vermeiden.

to tread

to press is also OK in this field, but I'd use tread

grapes vs juice

Might the difference between 'produzieren' and 'keltern' be that in the former case they purchase grape juice and vinify it and in the second they produce (or buy) grapes which they press?

You'd definitely need confirmation from the producer before spelling that out, though.

It seems most German Sekt is made from imported juice, so the practice is not unheard of.

Reference:

keltern = produzieren?
