French term

Cellule d’irradiation

French to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation Photovoltaic systems
From instructions for the use of a road surface photovoltaic system:

"L’armoire électrique est connectée aux dalles, elle intègre des équipements de régulation, de transformation et de surveillance énergétique.
Elle est équipée de :
• Protection DC
• Protection AC
• Onduleur (Voir annexe 1)
• Parafoudre
• Monitoring WebdynSun (Voir Annexe 2)
• Accessoires (prises 2P+T, thermostat, ventilateur, antenne XXX)

"Irradiation cell" doesn't sound right to me in this (non-nuclear) context

Johannes Gleim Mar 23:
BME688 The BME688 is the first gas sensor with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and integrated high-linearity and high-accuracy pressure, humidity and temperature sensors. It is housed in a robust yet compact 3.0 x 3.0 x 0.9 mm³ package and especially developed for mobile & connected applications where size and low power consumption are critical requirements. The gas sensor can detect Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and other gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the part per billion (ppb) range.
https://www.bosch-sensortec.com/products/environmental-senso...

This exemplifies many other sensors. It should be emphasised that these are chips located in a housing and note that, as a factory inspector, I have checked many manufacturers for compliance to standards, including for gas sensors, and am therefore familiar with their internal layout.

Silvanet Wildfire Sensor While reading my technical-scientific journal today, I came across another sensor that draws its energy from a solar panel and detects gases and smoke with a micromechanical chip. It was easy to track down on the Internet.

The Silvanet Wildfire Sensor is designed to detect forest fires within minutes, often during their early smoldering phase, greatly reducing the risk of them spreading out of control. Our solar-powered wildfire sensors use LoRaWAN for wireless data transmission and can run maintenance-free for up to 15 years without the need for batteries, avoiding the use of lithium and other toxic materials.

Johannes Gleim Mar 22:
@ Bashiqua I am quite sure that you are being irradiated by your radiator, rather than radiated. Thank you for confirming.

Bashiqa Mar 22:
@ anybody who has time to spare The radiators in my house radiate heat, not light. I feel warm but do not, as far as I am aware become irradited. The sensor in my body indicates that I am warm.
Johannes Gleim Mar 22:
@ Mark I'm sorry, but "radiation" is the exact opposite of "irradiation". You should already know that from your Latin lessons. Example:
religiosus = conscientious, faithful, God-fearing, pious, holy
irreligiosus = godless
iniustus = unjust, unfair, wrong
iustus = just, honest, upright, lawful, right

Again: Radiation is the light emitted from any source.
Irradiation is the received light from the source.
The context deals only with irradiation.
Bashiqa Mar 22:
@ Mark Would you please close the question. Whether you award me the points is not important, but would at least put an end to further discussion points. Thank you, Chris. aka bashiqa.

A sensor is a device that produces an output signal for the purpose of detecting a physical phenomenon.
In the broadest definition, a sensor is a device, module, machine, or subsystem that detects events or changes in its environment and sends the information to other electronics, frequently a computer processor.
Analog sensors such as potentiometers and force-sensing resistors are still widely used.

Note: A metering instrument is a device (containing sensors for sensing environmental values)
Johannes Gleim Mar 14:
"Irradiation CELL" sonne en effet un peu décalé. Je m'appuie plutôt sur la terminologie du client et de SMA.

D'ailleurs, cette terminologie est également utilisée par sevensensor.com :
"Irradiance sensors are devices that measure the amount of sunlight that falls on a specific surface in a given time period. These sensors are widely used in photovoltaic (PV) plants to measure the amount of solar radiation that is available for conversion into electricity."
https://www.sevensensor.com/irradiance-sensor-types-and-usag...
Schtroumpf Mar 14:
Monsieur Gleim...
""Irradiation CELL" doesn't sound right to me" !
Johannes Gleim Mar 14:
@ Schtroumpf Very industrious! But please inform yourself about the basics of electronic measurement technology first. You always need a reference point, in this case the "cellule de référence". When measuring voltage, for example, you need the earth or the protective conductor as a reference point. You also need a reference point when measuring other values.
I measured temperatures electronically for 16 years during my professional career and always used a reference point. A simple example would be a thermocouple with hot and cold leads.
Conclusion: the reference cell is a necessary part of the irradiation sensor, but not the irradiation sensor itself.
Incidentally, we do not need to rely on competitors if the customer WebdynSun has already chosen or coined the term itself.
Schtroumpf Mar 13:
Cellule, cell...
https://www.sevensensor.com/fr/etude-comparative-des-pyranom...
https://www.sevensensor.com/comparison-of-pyranometers-vs-re...
Bashiqa Mar 13:
@ Johannes Yes, there is a difference - the solar radiation sensor is irradiated by the sun. I.e. my answer is correct I believe.
Johannes Gleim Mar 13:
@ Bashiqa Thank you! I see, you've understood the differencs.
Bashiqa Mar 13:
@ Johannes I have spent the last 30 minutes outdoors feeling the warmth of the solar radiation. I now feel sufficiently irradiated to come back indoors. No further refs.
Johannes Gleim Mar 13:
@ Althea As a factory inspector, I have also checked SMA and its products, e.g. Sunny Boy, for conformity with the certifications and therefore know them very well. Even back then, they only ever talked about "irradiation".
Johannes Gleim Mar 13:
Difference between radiation and irradiation What are the similarities and differences between radiation and irradiation?
There is some confusion in the use of these two words.
Relevant answer: It just depends on the point of view of view. Radiation is the energy emitted by a source. Irradiation is the process of exposing an object to radiation.
https://www.researchgate.net/topic/Radiation
This energy must penetrate the air layer and any clouds and is further reduced by the angle of incidence and any shading from trees and neighbouring buildings.
Johannes Gleim Mar 13:
How is it called by WebdynSun? It is superfluous to invent a new designation because the device is already distributed by the manufacturer under the name "Irradiation and Temperature Sensor".
If only the "Irradiation sensor" is emphasised in the context, the name can be shortend to "Irradiation Sensor". You wouldn't rename the United States of America either.
Althea Draper Mar 12:
From the description in your additional context, it sounds like a PV solar monitoring system. My mum's solar panels inverter has a unit in it that sends data about the instantaneous PV power generated to a small unit that can display real time generation or historic generation. Examples in this link for domestic and large sale generation
https://www.solartradesales.co.uk/Cache/Downloads/Sunny-beam...
There are also units that can be installed directly onto solar modules and measure irradiation and temperature, see here
https://documents.unboundsolar.com/media/sma-sunny-sensor-bo...
Mark Bossanyi (asker) Mar 12:

irradiance meter

This must be the Xattxay system by Mon petit frère, t'auras du lolo, the Boogieman parent company of which I do a lot of work for. There's a Xattxay solar road (the first) not far from me here in Normandy. These days they seem to be focusing on using the system cycle paths rather than roads, or as isolated 'pads' for charging ebikes, etc.

The irradiance meter atop the control station serves to measure the efficiency of the system.

Irradiance is measured in watts per square meter and comes in the form of electromagnetic radiation. An irradiance meter therefore allows you to measure how your solar PV panel is performing and ensures you are getting the maximum output from your PV system.

You'll find reference to the Normandy solar road and the term 'irradiance meter' here:

To set the scene, we characterize the long-term energy availability of solar resource at any location, the theoretical potential. This potential is illustrated by the physical variable of global horizontal irradiation (GHI), which is the sum of direct and diffuse irradiation components received by a horizontal surface. GHI is measured in kilowatthours per square metre (kWh/m²).
https://globalsolaratlas.info/global-pv-potential-study

Solar irradiance is the power per unit area (surface power density) received from the Sun in the form of electromagnetic radiation in the wavelength range of the measuring instrument. Solar irradiance is measured in watts per square metre (W/m²) in SI units.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_irradiance

The first step for simulating photovoltaic systems is modeling the irradiation.
The irradiation on the PV modules is calculated from the climate data, which usually contain the ambient temperature and the solar irradiation in hourly resolution. This requires a series of partial steps:
1. Calculation of the sun position
2. Calculation of extraterrestrial radiation
3. Calculation of the geometry of module area and angle of irradiation (tracking)
4. Division of irradiation into direct and diffuse components (Diffuse radiation model)
5. Calculation of shadowing losses due to distant objects (horizontal shading)
6. Calculation of irradiation on the inclined plane
7. Calculation of [ground reflection] (https://help.valentin-software.com/pvsol/en/calculation/irra...

Performance the irradiance sensor is one of the sensors used in the PV plant for professional monitoring and evaluation of photovoltaic systems.
The irradiance sensor, known as the photovoltaic pyranometer, has emerged with the development of photovoltaic systems as a derivative of pyranometers and is used to measure the value of irradiance from the sun.

The irradiance sensors of the Si-Series measure via a monocrystalline silicium solar cell the solar irradiance. To minimize influences of temperature to the measuring signal all of our irradiance sensors are using an active temperature compensation via a temperature sensor laminated to the back surface of the solar cell.
Additionally to the solar irradiance measurement our Si-Sensors with the extension “-T” are able to measure the solar cell temperature. This solar cell temperature can approximately be used as module temperature.
