determining a coefficent of friction of a road surface

wheel slippage
When this occurs, the wheel has lost traction with the road surface.
Could also use "wheel slipping."
Could also use "wheel slipping."
Note from asker:
Thanks. I should have noted that the document itself mentions slip as an equivalent term, i.e. as in "bei Auftreten eines Radabrisses, also einem Durchdrehen der Räder". I'm looking for a translation of the actual term "Radabriss" |
at the moment I'm using "wheel breakaway" |
Thanks for all the contributions! I quite like "loss of traction" |

wheelspin
"Wheelspin is where the driver applies too much throttle and the torque (turning force) of the wheels overcomes the grip available from the road surface. You most commonly see this on a drag racing track where drivers use it to warm up their tyres. Modern traction control systems don’t let the wheels spin. To stop the wheels spinning, lift off the throttle. Wheelspin when going around a corner will result in understeer in a front-wheel drive car and oversteer in a rear-wheel drive car."
This is one of the four types of skid (with oversteer, understeer, hydroplaning) described here: https://www.drivingtests.co.nz/resources/skidding-explained-...
https://mocktheorytest.com/resources/what-is-a-skid/ gives 6 types.
"Wheelspin is caused when you accelerate too hard on a slippery surface and the torque of the engine overcomes the available grip. It’s less likely to happen in a four-wheel drive car because you have twice as much tyre in contact with the road." [rubbish, the amount of tyre contact is the same, just the amount of driven-tyre contact changes]
Yes, I know, you have durchdrehen at the end.

German term (edited):
Radabriss => Radschlupf
Wheel slip (tyre/tire slip)
"Wheel separation" is not an automotive term. It would imply that a wheel comes off the axle hub, which could lead to an accident.
The technical term is "Radschlupf” or more precisely "Reifenschlupf":
Reifenschlupf (Kfz), Schlupf, Radschlupf
• Tire slip
• Wheelslip
(Fachwörterbuch der Kfz-Technik)
Radschlupf / wheel slip
Reifenschupf / tyre slip
(Dictionary of Exact Science and Technology)

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antiblockiersystem
The first proper recognition of the ABS system came later with the German engineer Karl Wässel, whose system for modulating braking power was officially patented in 1928. Wässel, however, never developed a working product and neither did Robert Bosch who produced a similar patent eight years later.[5]
The pump in the ABS is used to restore the pressure to the hydraulic brakes after the valves have released it. A signal from the controller will release the valve at the detection of wheel slip. After a valve releases the pressure supplied from the user, the pump is used to restore the desired amount of pressure to the braking system.

In (automotive) vehicle dynamics, slip is the relative motion between a tire and the road surface it is moving on. This slip can be generated either by the tire's rotational speed being greater or less than the free-rolling speed (usually described as percent slip), or by the tire's plane of rotation being at an angle to its direction of motion (referred to as slip angle).

I distinguish clearly between loss of grip and slippage. In context, it is not about "loss of static friction", but about the first instant of spinning when the wheel starts to slip with undefined rotation. 'mico slip' is off-the subject, see discussion.

https://www.colliseum.eu/wiki/index.php?title=Untersuchung_a...

Also auch "off-the-subject"

The translation style itself was irrelevant to me. I only searched for the translations of the terms in question, and this confirmed my interpretation "Radabriss" = wheel slip = whellslip.
Using synonymous terms for a phenomenon is rather counterproductive in patents, but not forbidden. In the context, however, "wheel slip" is not a suitable synonym, but is confusing because it is not the wheel that tears off, but the frictional connection to the road surface that is lost and the wheel "spins" (typical for aqua planing)
As a side effect, Craig could compare these terms in German and English with his original and clearly distinguish between correct and incorrect translations.
I've already explained this here:
https://www.proz.com/kudoz/german-to-english/automotive-cars...
Forgot the link there, apparently, so here it is again:
"Patents with only non-English text have been machine-translated to English and indexed, so you can search patent publications using only English keywords."
https://support.google.com/faqs/answer/7049585?hl=en
That it's a machine translation is easy to recognize, by the way, as the "translated" (haha) version starts off with "So reveals the..." Also, part of it is still in German!
Plus, if you had actually looked at the patent in its entirety, you'd have seen that there are two abbreviations, one for Radabriss (Abr), another for Schlupf (Slip).
Additionally, I don't know how many posts I still need to explain this to everyone, but the number of Google results is misleading and irrelevant. It's about quality, not quantity.
When I type in "wheel slippage" and add site:com, I get more than SIX MILLION hits, but only 344K for doing the same with "wheel slip."
The principal causes of wheel breakage on cut-off machines are:
• A). Excessive Wheel Speed
• B). Improper Mounting of the Wheel
• C). Work Improperly Clamped
• D). Abusive Operation
• E). Improper Machine Conditions
• F). Unequal Coolant Distribution
• G). Excessive Wheel Feed into Work
• H). Wheel Grade Too Hard

So reveals the DE 10 2020 200 161 B3 a method for protecting an electric machine from overspeed in a hybrid motor vehicle drive train with at least one axle that can be driven at least partially via the electric machine, comprising the following steps:
:
Detection of a wheel breakage by detecting a micro-slip between a driving and a non-driven axle,
- Estimation of a current road surface friction coefficient based on the driving wheel torque calculated when the wheel breaks away and the dynamic axle load of the driven axle calculated when the wheel breaks away,
:
procedure after claim 3 , characterized in that when determining the current tire stiffness (St) as a statistical mean value, only previously calculated current friction coefficient requirements (µ dem ) and current tire slips (Slip) are taken into account that lie within a predetermined maximum deviation from a mean value.

They also say that Radabriss is nothing more than Durchdrehen (though I think what they meant to say was that the wheels spinning is the result of the tires losing traction). More than once, it says "eines Radabrisses, also einem Durchdrehen der Räder" and they include "Abr" as the abbreviation for it (so not even the Germans need -rad necessarily).
As you said, all a bit doppelt-gemoppelt.
Enjoy your evening!
@Craig, you have to choose your poison here. Breakaway, slip, slippage, traction loss - all can work.
@Björn - agreed that "wheel" does not have to be part of it, unless there are different types of slippage to be distinguished from each other.
What we have here, Craig, is one of those pesky German compounds that don't actually mean anything beyond the most obvious or what has already been explained.
Radabriss is just the short form of "Abreissen des Rads von der Straße", so usually, the explanation that follows would be sufficient on its own. I know you need a word, so might I suggest traction or grip loss? Can't think of anything shorter and "wheel" doesn't need to be part of it.
