تجمع المياه العادمة في الحفرة الامتصاصية حيث ينساب جزء من المواد السائلة إلى التربة المحيطة من خلال الفتحات والشقوق الموجودة، قد تصل المياه العادمة إلى أحد مصادر المياه مما تؤدي إلى تلوثها. تجمع المواد الصلبة في الحفرة يؤدي إلى إغلاق الفتحات في التربة ويمنع تسرب المياه من الحفرة ويؤدي إلى امتلائها، وهذا يتطلب إفراغها بشكل متكرر. وغالبا ما تطرح محتويات الحفرة الامتصاصية في الأودية، بجانب الطرق أو الأراضي المجاورة، طرحها بهذا الصورة يشكل مكرهة صحية، أما المواد السائلة فإنها قد تتسرب إلى داخل الأرض لتصل إلى مصدر مياه.
