Arabic to English Art/Literary Sports / Fitness / Recreation Syria
Hi everyone,

I'm translating a short story about 3 poor brothers. In this section, they are playing football with the stones of the fruit they have just eaten.

I have found that عتيد can mean either "future/forthcoming" or "accustomed/familiar". I'm wondering if it's clear to anyone what the writer's intention is here. These are my current options:
- he's so skilled, he could become a football player in the future
- it seems he's very accustomed to playing football with fruit stones (nothing to do with his skill)
- it's clear that he plays football a lot (nothing to do with his skill)

Thanks in advance!
Anam

Saeed Najmi Oct 8, 2021:
Of the options you have listed, "skilled" could be an option, it just is that عتيد، as suggested by the guys on this question, refers to s.o strong, robust, athletic. I was however just wondering what makes a great striker, is it skill or build or/and more? Once that is defined, the meaning of عتيد will have been identified.
