Dutch term

intellectuele gebruiksrechten

Dutch to English Law/Patents Law (general)
Does this term actually exist (I can find hardly any proof online that it is actually a correct term), and if so, what would be a good English translation? JurLex gives 'intellectual property rights', but I have my doubts.

Discussion

Michael Beijer (asker) Feb 1, 2014:
Thanks everyone. I think I probably should have mentioned that this isn't a term from a text I am actually trying to translate. I just happened across it (in JurLex) and was puzzled because I had never heard of it, and wondered if it might not be incorrect.

Having read everyone's comments, I now think Tina's answer is probably correct, and that 'intellectuele gebruiksrechten' refers to '(intellectual property) usage rights'.
Kirsten Bodart Feb 1, 2014:
That's what I was thinking Maybe the text writer doesn't know what they're talking about or want to be too precise (common problem).
Nicole Coesel Feb 1, 2014:
This is not a common term. Sounds more like the usual intellectual propperty rights are meant, which include the usage rights. More context would be welcome.
Natasha Ziada (X) Feb 1, 2014:
Do you mean 'Intellectuele eigendomsrechten - Intellectual Property'?

One of the most common examples of intellectual property usage rights is the licence you buy to use software. You get (non-exclusive) user rights under certain specific conditions set out by the property rights owner.

Thank you.
agree Jack den Haan : The source term is obviously a misnomer.

Thank you Jack. Usually abbreviated to 'usage rights'. 'User rights' afaik is more often used for certain groups who have access to something, e.g. sensitive data.
agree Hans Geluk : Yes, JurLex is wrong here, 'intellectual property rights' would be 'intellectuele eigendomsrechten'.

intellectual user (vs. property) rights

It's user and not use or usage rights and it's prefectly understandable as, for instance, licenc/se rights to use and not claim the property in a patent, trademark, utility model or design.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Jack den Haan : Hmm... are the rights intellectual or is the user intellectual? In my humble opinion, this is the same kind of misnomer as in Dutch. Only two google hits, by the way.

intellectual user-rights as opposed to intellectual-user rights. There is no reason why lawyers can't be creative, artistic & imaginative by coining new terms. And no G/hits does not mean bog-standard EN legal drafting or practice points are off-limits.
disagree Nicole Coesel : In you want to go this route, I'd suggest Intellectual right of use. Definately not Intellectual user rights as it is, as Jack stated, confusing.

Definitely - PLEASE. And the whole term is a package.
