Este es un juego de palabras en un libro cristiano. En el inglés se lee así:
"....The world wonders what in the heaven God is doing loving us..." ("Heaven" está en itálicas, destacando el juego de palabras).
"Que rayos" simplemente no encaja aquí, en mi opinión.

Sí es un juego de palabras difícil, porque como bien dices el énfasis habitual (qué rayos/diablos/narices) no encaja.
Quizás te sirva esta expresión utilizada por la mismísima Santa Teresa de Jesús en su epistolario: iOh, qué cielos hace aquí! (pág. 721)

| Gracias, pero "qué rayos/qué demonios" sería totalmente inviable en el contexto, donde se está hablando sobre Dios. "Qué rayos" es equivalente a "What the hell" en inglés, y no se diría "What the hell is God doing loving sinners". Or at least I wouldn't use that! |
