I would translate "circuit de distribution" as "distribution network". Can one speak of a network being "short" or "long" though??

Comment: "The sources quoted explain "short" channels as being channels with fewer or no intermediaries, so that seems okay to me (had never seen that before). Also, after further reading of the text, I think it is more channels than networks here."

As they are talking about distribution of fruit and veg, this seems a straightforward way of expressing it (and avoiding 'short' which, as you say, sounds odd/wrong when used with 'networks')
