Italian term

assi

Italian to English Medical Medical: Cardiology Phlebography / Venography
"Entrambi gli *assi* venosi profondi femoro-poplitei sono pervi."
"Pervi gli assi iliaci femorali".

This is from a "Flebografia arti inferiori bilaterale"

I don't know what English anatomical term is used in this context. Is it correct in English to say "deep venous axes" or "iliac-femoral axes", or is there a more standard term for "asse", in this context, in English?

I find quite a number of Google hits for 'femoral axis' and similar phrases, but when I look at the source I see that they come from articles by authors in other (non-English speaking) countries, so I'm still not sure if 'axis/axes' is correct in standard medical English.

Thanks again!

venous system//veins// branches

I though of it more closely, read a few articles and concluded that in fact 'assi' is redundant. It simply means 'veins' or venous system, if you will. You may also go a step further and say branches, but I think just veins suffices.

[Contribution of Doppler investigations of the deep venous axes to the prevention and diagnosis of thrombo-embolic disease (author's transl)]
[Article in French]

Dany F, Kim M, Roulet MD.

Abstract
The venous disease study by Doppler ultrasound technique provides a precious help to its diagnosis because the dubiousness and limits of clinical examination. The main indications of Doppler ultrasound deep veins examination are: --early diagnosis of thrombophlebitis, venous insufficiency and arterio-venous fistulae. --a non invasive monitoring of medical or surgical treatment of venous pathology and best appreciation of venous return in right heart cardiopathies, respiratory disease and abdominal surgery. --help in central venous catheterization. The sensibility of Doppler ultrasound in venous thrombosis is 86.5% and its specificity 91% in a study of 110 patients with comparison Doppler-venography. These results quite comparable with other studies, indicate a poor sensibility for the diagnosis of distal thrombi or partially occluding clots. In association with other non invasive examination Doppler ultrasound allows a better indication of phlebography in the detection of thrombophlebitis in high risk patients as well as a post operative survey with high sensitivity and good efficiency.

Conclusion.

Abstract
The use of long-term central venous catheters is a routine in chronic pediatric diseases. Thrombotic complications progressively reduce the central venous capital and hamper the long-term management of these patients.

Observation. – We report two cases of obstruction of the central upper venous system and discuss of the techniques used to repermeabilize venous axes before the placement of a new central line.

Conclusion. – The control of the permeability of the central veins should be performed before any withdrawal of central catheters, repermeabilization of the venous axes being simpler when the central catheter is kept in place in the occluded vessel.

This is Spanish:

So Italian, French and Spanish physician are all wrong :)

Ah...this is also wrong, since German:

Artery-vein separation (AVS) tools are currently under development by the major MRI equipment manufacturers as well as by independent providers. They will be primarily based on semiautomatic methods. In these procedures, the central arterial and venous axes have to be identified by manual placement of seeds. After this has been done the software automatically separates arteries from the veins by a level-set framework and segmentation algorithms. Requirements of AVS software tools are a minimum of user interaction, a high speed for the post-processing process compatible with diagnostic clinical routine, and high quality – combined with reproducibility of the post-processing results.

What about this one which is American ?:

· CAT scan of brain, neck, chest and abdomen with contrast medium: “In left area of neck, lymphadenopathic mass from level 4 to the axillary glands; the anteroposterior and laterolateral diameters of the initial lymphadenopathic conglomerate are 7 cm and 3.5 cm; in the left axillary region there are multiple lymphadenomegalies, the maximum being approximately 25 mm; the lymph nodes described in the laterocervical-retroclavicular and left axillary area are compressing the venous axes, although without causing thrombotic phenomena currently; solid tissue of pyramidal appearance in anterosuperior mediastinum related to thymic residue.” Total-body PET: “Various hyperfixation areas attributable to adenopathies, partially confluent in the conglomerate, in the laterocervical, subclavicular and left axillary regions, as well as left subscapular and bilateral intercostal areas, with an area of intense fixation of neoplastic significance (SUV max 14.1 diameter 33 mm) in cutaneous and subcutaneous regions in left paramedian area of trunk.” Oncology visit: “Chemotherapy with Cisplatin, Vinblastin and Decarbazine (CVD regimen) is felt to be indicated, in combination with immunotherapy with Interferon alpha-2b, three million units three times a week subcutaneously. Indication of prophylactic antithrombotic therapy should also be evaluated for the compression of venous axes in the neck and left axillary region.”

Ciao Lionel and thank you for your quick answer ... however, I couldn't open 3 or 4 of these references ... I get a "page not found'' message. The springerlink article ("notions of the cardiovascular system") was written by Italians ... sono tutti bravi, questi italiani, certo, ma io ho bisogno di articoli scritti in inglese da madrelingue inglese soltanto, per essere sicuro che 'axes' sia la parola corretta! Ne puoi trovare alcuni altri? Grazie di nuovo.
