We reviewed three check-printing software packages and MICR toner cartridges: Check Factory, CheckMaster, and Corporate Checking. All produced excellent-looking checks that cleared the bank without problems, but employed different approaches to the new art of do-it-yourself check printing. Three other available MICR packages are Create-a-Check Personal, from Create-a-Check Inc. (800/621-5720), Blank Check, from South Data Corp. (919/719-5000), and a high-end program used in the banking industry, Micro MICR System, from Blauser & Co. (404/479-7905). Academy Systems' $99 DOS standalone program, Corporate Checking, is a lot more than a MICR check printing package. It's also a capable accounts payable program that keeps track of vendor payments. The package performs bank reconciliations, and prints W-2 and 1099 forms.

The program performs many of the functions of a general-ledger accounting package. For example, it distributes costs against multiple expense categories and companies. It also produces several helpful reports, including age and deduction summaries and vendor, check, and account category summaries.

Leading-edge technology can help turn a costly problem related to multiple checking accounts into a money-saving solution. Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) check-printing software allows the printing of professional-looking, negotiable checks on a laser printer. If the software is properly designed and used, these checks will conform with American Banking Association and American National Standards Institute guidelines and clear the bank and Federal Reserve Clearinghouses without problems. A company that prints its own checks saves money; more important, it can also save time. Three check-printing software packages and MICR toner cartridges are reviewed: 1. Trans-Micro Inc.'s Check Factory, 2. CheckMaster Corp.'s CheckMaster Plus, Business Version, and 3. Academy Systems Inc.'s Corporate Checking Version MS-1.1. Of these, Corporate Checking is the best stand-alone solution, while Check Factory is the software that integrates printing with a DOS accounting program. Those who want to produce MICR-encoded checks by interfacing with a Windows accounting program should choose CheckMaster Plus.
