Russian term
второй смысловой ряд
Russian to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
When I Googled this, it came up with a good number of hits, so it must be an established phrase, but the dictionaries I've consulted haven't had a translation. I'm pretty sure I understand what it means, but I can't think of a good English equivalent. I would expect there to be some established English term; can anyone help me out?
Here's the context:
Особо следует отметить умение Ивана Пархоменко создавать второй смысловой ряд образов своих картин, используя для этого символы

second layer of meaning
Could it be 'second layer of meaning' (i.e. a deeper meaning, and not the meaning that one gets at a first glance)? I have come across this phrase in art, and it could apply to Parkhomenko's works (looking at them on the Internet). However, I cannot at present quote a reference.
