evaluation of authenticity of a work of art
About a museum deciding whether to buy a work of art:
Реставраторы и искусствоведы считают, что мы имеем дело с подлинником, но очень **сильно записанным,** а технологи говорят, что произведение выполнено в конце XIX, а не в XV веке.
Written about? In bad condition because people have scribbled over it [like Leonardo's manuscripts?]? (I find this phrase online in descriptions of used mattresses and carpets that people are trying to sell!)
Thanks in advance.

heavily overpainted
По композиции „Сошествие во ад" несколько отличается от такой же композиции в Благовещенском соборе, но очень близко к „Сошествию во ад" Успенского собора во Владимире, искаженному записями и производящему впечатление слабой копии с хорошего оригинала.

heavily painted over
that's it, I think.
Either corrected or simply painted over with another image.
Naturally, as a native speaker you would know that overpainted is a completely different kettle of fish, meaning simply "overworked". That's not it – at least not here.

Note from asker:
Hi Michael. Maybe I'm too overpainted a native speaker to have noticed, but I never heard of such a term meaning "overworked." Don't overpaint yourself! |
Oh. Not being an artist, I understood "overworked" to be what happens to a translator who has been glued to the computer for a 14-hour day for two weeks with no day off. Live and learn. |

: Sure, overworked means the kind you should have left well alone way back and didn't, and now it's been worked to death and beyond any recognition. I should know, I have a few of those:) Cheers, Michael.

: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overpainting // Absolutely unambiguous in this context. Museums have to make these decisions all the time. It's an authenticity issue, not an aesthetic one. (And "overworking" is irrelevant here. You brought that one up.)

see my explanation. At best, the usage is ambiguous; at worst – wrong.. I can bring in Googòe too; that's not the way to solve this, though. It's also linguistic. In my vew, "painted over" is a correct usage. Goddit?...(I mean, do you understand?):)))))
