Russian term

сведен в синонимы

Russian to English Science Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) Species classification
"Этот вид, описанный по двум экземплярам из Сибири, в дальнейшем был ***сведен в синонимы***.

I suspect that the proper translation of "сведен в синонимы" is "synonymized." But I am unsure of that, because in researching the language I almost always found the phrase "сведен в синонимы к." followed by the name of another species or genus. In English, I found "synonymized with." I'm hoping somebody who knows more about the subject than I do can either tell me I'm right or set me straight.

I found similar language on the internet: Всего синонимизированы пять семейств, девять родов перенесены в другие семейства, один род ***сведен в синонимы***, два рода и два вида восстановлены из младших синонимов. Один род исключен из состава Grylloblattida. Переописаны голотипы пяти монотипических родов. (http://www.disszakaz.com/catalog/12970.html)

Discussion

Marina Aleyeva Sep 26, 2009:
reduced to a synonym is the most frequent phrase. It can be and often is used as a stand-alone term.<br><br>The earlier name H. pinnata was conserved and M. verticillata reduced to a synonym.<br>;www.plantzafrica.com/planthij/hermanniapinnata.htm
Dr Lofthouse Sep 25, 2009:
'synonymized' does appear as a widely used term eg http://hymfiles.biosci.ohio-state.edu/catalogs/ichneumonids/ and a host of others, as you said.
Dr Lofthouse Sep 25, 2009:
..it isn't my field, but the phrase contains 'reduced to a ...', so I'm hazarding a guess its reclassification that moves it to a 'sub-something'
Dr Lofthouse Sep 25, 2009:
could it mean 'reduced to a sub-species or sub-generic group'?? eg see this reference for 'reclassification of lactobacillus' after a phylogenomics study ..http://ijs.sgmjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/58/12/2945

Synonymized

"Sometimes, especially in the past when communication was more difficult, taxonomists working in isolation have given two distinct names to individual organisms later identified as the same species. When two named species are discovered to be of the same species, the older species name is usually retained, and the newer species name dropped, a process called synonymization, or colloquially, as lumping. Dividing a taxon into multiple, often new, taxons is called splitting. Taxonomists are often referred to as "lumpers" or "splitters" by their colleagues, depending on their personal approach to recognizing differences or commonalities between organisms (see lumpers and splitters)."

So one name is dropped (reduced to its synonym)
