ИЗО

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Software
I assume this is "изобразительное искусcтво" - "graphic art" in this case.

"Кнопки ИЗО позволяют увеличить и уменьшить размер изображений в Галерее."

"Кнопка ИЗО «Перейти на уровень выше» открывает папку, в которой расположена текущая папка."

Would I just call them "the Graphic Art buttons" (in the first sentence)? Is there some abbreviation, or something else, in English that would convey the same thing? Am I even on the right track?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Feb 27, 2004:
View buttons I agree, view menu would sound better for the first sentence. But I don't suppose it would fit in the second sentence, or in the following sentences:
" ."
" - , ."
These are buttons specific to the "Gallery," so I think the author is trying to call them by some catchy name. Perhaps I should just lose "" altogether?
Thanks for your help!

I'm sure your expansion is right, but that's not what they're called in English! Zoom in and zoom out are usually on the View menu.

Actually \"View Menu\" would be better.

Replying to your note, yes I think you should just lose IZO - it doesn\'t add anything.

agree Sergei Tumanov : my assumption - it is the "skillful" translation of VIEW from english, which you should translate back into english now. ИЗО(бражение)-для русского всегда как-то связано с катинками

agree Сергей Лузан : Graphic/(s) View buttons /(Menu). In that direction, at least.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you for your comments! I actually just contacted the client, and it turns out "ИЗО" isn't meant to be translated, but rather indicates that an "ИЗОбражение" (as Sergei proposed) should be placed at that point in the text. He'd merely overlooked highlighting it as text that shouldn't be translated! "

На всякий случай поясню, что ISO - это International Standards Organization = Международная Организация по стандартизации. Они разрабатывают стандарты для всего на свете, начиная с изотопного состава ядерного топлива, и заканчивая раскраской обивок детских колясок.

neutral David Knowles : Following your ref. this refers to writing CDs, which do indeed have an ISO format. I don't think that's what's meant here.

Probably, you are right, David
