loss leaders

This is a common expression if the prices are lowered to the extent that no profit is made on them, with the idea that customers will be attracted to the company's products and like them in which case the profits are made on other products, and the "loss leader" price can eventually be raised back to a profitable level.
But this may be reading too much into it, as the original does not say that these are actually non-profit or loss-making prices.
