For what it's worth, Google gives: objects/subjects of ecological/environmental monitoring. Seems to me that polluted rivers could be such. However, the Google sources of the aforesaid sites are for the most part translations of the Russian; right or wrong, decide for yourself upon reading the context.

это не так интересно, как кажется:) доклад по Донецкой области, поэтому:являлись реки Кальмиус (г. Донецк, г. Мариуполь), Бахмут (г. Артемовск) и Кальчик (с. Кременевка, г. Мариуполь). Хотя не удивлюсь, если наши реки и в мире лидируют
поскольку, когда мы изучали в институте Экологию, нам мадам сразу сказала - в нашей области даже ОЗК носить бесполезно:(
