Cheesecake (in the US) is a dessert made with cream cheese (very smooth cheese, almost like very thick sour cream) sugar, eggs, with a bottom crust, baked in the oven or not. It may only match глазированные сырки (glazed cheesecake)

Cheese ake made of a swwet dough and on a top of it you pour a sweet yellow souse. I am not sure it has cheese in it.

Мда, меня этот вопрос всегда занимал. Я все пытался лучшей половине объяснить, что же такое творог, и безуспешно; а когда она его в России попробовала, то и сама не могла подобрать американский эквивалент.

cottage cheese, and no equivalent

The most similar thing to творог in England is cottage cheese which is always savoury, no one would understand what kurds are, we don't have a sweet equivalent, сырки have no equivalent we have nothing even slightly similar so maybe a description - chocolate covered sweet cheese perhaps, though it's awkward.

cheese cake = чизкейк I'm afraid maybe sweet cheese rolls for сырки? I don't like it very much though.

curd cheese, sweet cheese patties

1) "curd cheese" is a broader term than cottage cheese or farmer's cheese. To my mind, it is the best summary term for творог. As a student in Russia in 1972, I lived on творог, and would not have called it "cottage cheese."

2) For сырки, I think it's a good idea to stay away from "cheesecake" in any variation, since that's a well-known, and quite different, product. Having experimented with various translations, including "cheese pancakes," I've settled on "sweet cheese patties."

For Anna F.: No, I haven't seen anything called "cheese cake bites" in stores. I live in West Virginia. I understand from your other comments, that you're talking about a name for сырки which has come into use in some stores, specializing in Russian food.

But, if the translation is for American readers (for example) who don't frequent such stores, then "cheese cake bites" is going to sound like little pieces of cheesecake, which is quite a different product - made with cream cheese, not with curd cheese, more creamy than textured, etc.

"Sweet cheese patties," by itself, doesn't entirely do the job, but at least it doesn't steer the reader in the direction of a different product. And the association with Peppermint Patties might kick in, at least for some people.

Depending on the context, the translator could add more of an explanation: chocolate-covered sweet cheese patties.

Was thinking about "cheese pancakes" related to сырники, but "sweet cheese patties" for "сырки" - thinking about the candy "peppermint patties" which are peppermint cream covered w. chocolate; here, compressed sweet cheese, no? / See above.

ricotta cheese

I see it increasingly used (together with capuccino, zabaglione, and the like) even far beyond the Village and other yuppyvils all over the States, GB and the "colonies". And ricotta and tvorog are the same stuff!!! Much better than cottage cheese too! So there!

В американских продуктовых магазинах наиболее близкий эквивалент к нашим творожным сыркам будет "cheese cake bites", продаются в секции замороженных продуктов, но они не завернуты индивидуально, продаются по 10-15 штук в пластиковых коробках. Это был бы мой первый вариант ответа, но наверняка знаю, что в "русских магазинах" Америки они называются просто "cheese cakes" или "mini cheese cakes"

agree Nathan Williams : Definitely 'farmer's cheese'; I haven't seen 'cheese cakes' for творожные сырки, but neither have I looked. If you have, it sounds right to me.

I was never saying it has anything to do with cheese, but you can make it with cream cheese, nevertheless. French would appreciate the play on words, it is their thing. And I appreciate you softening your comment.
