Russian term

«цековские» дома

Russian to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Еще во времена СССР этот район облюбовала партийная номенклатура. Тогда, на рубеже 1970–1980-х годов, в арбатских переулках появилось около десятка однотипных зданий из светлого кирпича. Теперь их называют «цековскими» домами – по наименованию главного управляющего органа страны того времени, Центрального Комитета КПСС.

CC houses

Since the text goes on to explain that this is a reference to the Central Committee, the meaning of the word цековский will be as clear in English as it is in Russian.

Thank you.
neutral LilianNekipelov : I would spell it out--it may not be that obvious. Central Committee houses

Thank you. It might be necessary to do that, depending on how you word the whole thing.
agree Alexander Teplitsky : Quet symbolic CC = SS (for Russian eye)

Thank you. Yes, I hadn't thought of that (though the adjective for the SS is "эсэсовский").

Тhank you.
agree The Misha : For once, I have something to agree with that lady on. Central Committee, not CC. CC sounds more like credit card to me.

Thanks for your agree anyway.
agree katerina turevich : I think "houses" is more of an individual affair. Tall buildings housing many families are just that: buildings constructed for housing a certain population group. But funny, I just got a LinkedIn job invite for "Corporate Citizenships (CC)department

Thank you. I don't see the need for this, the sentence explaining what the Central Committee is comes directly after the CC word, so I would have thought it was obvious.

Politbureau houses

слово politbureau понятно англоязычным, как "верхушка официальной власти в СССР"
Note from asker:
I appreciate your input, but I don't think Politburo means (and is generally understood as) "верхушка официальной власти в СССР".

Спасибо!
disagree Susan Welsh : In English, Politburo (note spelling) means Политбюро, not something more general like "верхушка официальной власти в СССР"
18 mins
neutral rns : "politbureau" clashes with the reference to "Центрального Комитета КПСС" later in the sentence and has not enough members to justify building of a dozen houses.
23 mins
disagree The Misha : It's a mistranslation all right.

Tse-ka houses

цековский (Tse-ka) is explained in the original sentence and can be found elsewhere — http://goo.gl/7Wkakq — e.g.

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (... Tsentralniy Komitet Kommunistitcheskoi Partii Sovetskogo Soyuza – TsK KPSS), abbreviated in Russian as ЦК, "Tse-ka"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Committee_of_the_Commun...
Note from asker:
This is exactly what I came up with originally, but I dismissed this translation as far-fetched.
Peer comment(s):

agree katerina turevich : If it's used in the rest of the translation in this exact form, then it's probably the best way to do it.

"cencom" housing

Cencom - сокращение от Central Committee.
"cencom" apartment buildings or housing

Я сомневаюсь, что это houses, more likely they are apartment buildings or housing for short.
Peer comment(s):

neutral The Misha : If you say so yourself. I will bet you a dollar that to an American ear this sound more like the name of a command in the US military than an abbreviation for Central Committee.

And I thought it was a smart solution! :) To me it sounds as good or bad as цековский.
