The larger context is here: http://www.contr-tv.ru/print/3165/.

I know that "стороны света" usually translates as "cardinal points," but I don't see how that fits here, although I suppose it has something to do with Korea being a divided country.

Discussion

engltrans Jan 4, 2010:
I like this - partitioned
James McVay (asker) Jan 4, 2010:
Nice insights! I stared at this sentence so long I was getting a mental block. Here's what I have right now (before final edit, of course): "Let us recall the history of Korea before it was partitioned; indeed, that is where the source of the current problems lie."

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I actually ended up using "before it was partitioned," as most appropriate for the context. Despite all the votes for "not North and South Korea," I couldn't pick it. For one thing, it went without saying. The context refers to a time before there was a North and South Korea. For another, it would be just too damn awkward."

not being North and South Korea

Имеется ввиду, before being/becoming North and South Korea.

Or before being divided geographically into North and South.

Thank you, Aleksandr!
