Russian term

кровопролитие кровопролитию – рознь

Russian to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Скептик имеет право сказать, что кровопролитными завоеваниями изобилует вся история человечества, как на Западе, так и на Востоке. Но ***кровопролитие кровопролитию – рознь.*** Память каждого народа героизирует знаковые исторические события, превращает их в архетипический национальный миф.

Discussion

Olga B Aug 16, 2010:
I think it is not similar to "There are no two people alike" Here the point is that bloodsheds can justified and can be in the name of freedom, independence, etc. But they also can be for the purposes far from being noble.
gutbuster Aug 16, 2010:
there are no two bloodsheds alike
Similarly as in There are no two people alike

agree Judith Hehir : Clean. Nice, Mark. Or possibly: No two instances of bloodshed are alike

Thanks, Judi.
agree Rachel Douglas : I think "instance" will eliminate the contorted sound of other versions. "Not all instances of bloodshed are equivalent / alike."

I'm down with that. Thanks, Rachel.

Thank you.
agree JoeYeckley (X) : Agree. Following your concept, maybe "Each instance of bloodshed stands apart." Capturing a bit more of the sense of Рознь.

every bloody conquest is bloody different

Colloquial but catchy, this has to work with кровопролитными завоеваниями — bloody conquests — above.

Peer comment(s):

agree Alex Marshall : Good one. I like the play on words
