Six of one and half a dozen of the other
This is the UK version. I haven't come across Tatiana's version before. Maybe it's "чисто" American?

said when you agree that what you said was not exactly correct, but you think the difference is not important: "He was driving a red car." "Actually, it was maroon." "Same difference."

Same difference
It is completely not the same as 'six of one and half a dozen of the other'
'They've only got Fosters and Carling, which one do you want?'
:Six and two threes, they're both shite'

six of one and half a dozen of the other
Used to convey that there is little real difference between two alternatives: you blame me, I blame you—it was six of one and half a dozen of the other
You will notice that the last two refer to available alternatives, and only the first is spot-on.
He hit me in the face (по лбу)=He hit my face (в лоб)
The second tells what he hit.
The first emphasizes that it was the speaker who was hit.
I've grasped your differentiation: you seem to believe that 'hitting your student IN/ON the face' is better than 'being hit by your student IN/ON the face'.
Sorry, if we have different understanding of the 'в лоб' and the 'по лбу'.
