"National literature" wouldn't make in any other country.

*wouldn't make sense that is.

You're welcome, Natalya.
Russian History. Imagine you're an American employer, reviewing someone's resume and seeing "National History" on it. Firstly, it would seem odd. Secondly, if the applicant's nationality isn't obvious you'd need to follow up to even know the country in question.
It's just strange and unnecessary.

Even on a diploma, where I assume the issuing country is obvious, I don't see any reason to choose "National" over "Russian."

: Yes, even in America, we would say "American history/literature" to mean national.

National literature [of Russia etc.]
If the author wanted to say русская литература he/she could easily have done so.

: While I don't disagree with Mark, we do have National Government and National History in high schools. At least in my area.

: Of course. Literature, which was written by and belongs to one nation, which has got one motherland, subsequently, shares one fatherland.

Although "the period of study is 2001-2007" as you say, I believe the course actually covered a bit longer period :)
