Blood circulation
Hello everyone

I'm translating a dramatised biography of Dr Buteyko, who invented a breathing technique that bears his name. The passage that's foxing me is:

I understand the speaker to be saying that blood oxygen saturation is 96%, no matter how deeply or shallowly you breathe. I know the 'малый круг' is the lesser or pulmonary circulation, and I know that "шунтироваться" means to be shunted, diverted. But somehow I can't make sense of the whole sentence, especially as малый круг is in the prepositional case. (I've found lots of examples on the internet using the accusative case that I understand).

I suspect this will be yet another case where the answer seems simple once someone explains it to me... but at the moment I'm completely confused!

Thank you, Stanislav... I'm sure I'll have lots more queries before I'm finished!
Stanislav Korobov Jul 6, 2008:
By the way, Fiona, it seems that this breathing technique was invented long before the “invention” of Dr Buteyko, in particular by Indian yogs… Nevertheless, good luck with translation!

You are wellcome! I'll be glad to help you again:) Good luck!

That means that blood does not go through the lungs , thus is not aerated.

In some manner, blood is shunted past normal. lung tissue and escapes its detoxicating action.

Note from asker:
I'm afraid I still don't understand. What does it mean 'the blood is shunted in the pulmonary circulation'? The blood normally passes through the pulmonary circulation. To where is it shunted?
Ah-hah! Thank you for taking the time to explain this more fully and give links. I see now that the blood bypasses the pulmonary circulation and this is known as 'shunting'...
I see there's an explanation here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulmonary_shunt... thank you! It has been bothering me for a few days.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks once again for your help! Today, with fresh eyes, I see that even yesterday I was still making a mistake - the blood is shunted in the pulmonary circulation, meaning it bypasses the gas exchange sites (it does not bypass the pulmonary circulation as I first understood). But many warm thanks - I wouldn't have got it without your guidance."
