Type of seizure
Is it an epileptic seizure, is it always an epileptic seizure, and is it called an epileptic seizure if it occurs not as a result of primary epilepsy, but of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy?

You are welcome, Rachel! Well, you are getting pretty technical there :) If you'd like, give me more context and i'll check with my wife and her classmates - she's graduating from medical school in May.

Rachel, I asked a friend who's about to start a psychiatry residency. Here's what he said he does believe PML can be a cause of epileptic seizures because PML causes the brain to swell.
Hope it helps.

Note from asker:
Thanks, Aleksey. Actually, there's no question in my mind about "seizure" vs. "fit": it has to be "seizure." What I wanted to be sure about was something different, namely whether or not a seizure is called "epileptic" if it occurs in somebody whose primary diagnosis is not epilepsy, but progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy - and that this is what is meant in Russian by sticking on "эпи" as a prefix. It seems that everybody is telling me that this is the case. |

Comment: "Thanks for the extra research, Aleksey! Now I feel confident that "epi" doesn't mean something else, but does mean "epileptic.""
