Russian term

б…во [vulgarity]

May offend Russian to English Other Other
(Medvedev's meeting with rock singers.)

*I think that the word intended is блядство. i.e. immoral behaviour, but wanted to check.*

Natalie Oct 16, 2010:
Vitali Stanisheuski Oct 16, 2010:
Natalie Oct 16, 2010:
Vitali Stanisheuski Oct 16, 2010:
Kiwiland Bear Oct 15, 2010:
Сногсшибательные новости в русском языке: По последним данным от Alexandra T: "блядство" - is simply "having a very good time"

Stop press!!!
Alexandra Taggart Oct 15, 2010:
Pardon me? Oh? I think my explanation is more than sensible.I cannot see в приватной обстановке in any other way, than "sauna" or "sportshall" where Putin is exercising and not alone. What did you mean by "prostitution" is complitely unknown not to me only, but to any Russian reader!
Mikhail Kropotov Oct 15, 2010:
Stop misleading the asker.
Alexandra Taggart Oct 15, 2010:
в приватной обстановке-non-official - in the sauna mainly. Like Breznev - he even had his ministerial line there and could phone anywhere. Names of ladies we may never know, but they are well known in certain circles."блядство" - is simply "having a very good time"/"pleasant time"/"making the State business pleasant".

whoring

"prostitution" as suggested in another answer is too refined, too academic or legal. You need a stronger expression and this is the closest I can think of.

agree kamilw : like "whoring yourself out", I would agree too

prostitution

Not immoral behavior in general, but prostitution. Of course the Russian word is more explicit and offensive, but alas, I don't think we can do much better than 'prostitution'.

As a general note, блядство can stand for 'a rotten state of affairs' or perhaps 'a fucked up state of affairs'. Then it's just pretty much a general curse word. I.e.

- What the fuck!

- Things are really fucked up over there.

etc.

Hope this helps.

The sentence in your text could be translated as follows:

But this is just prostitution, pure and simple.
Peer comment(s):

agree kamilw : Exactly this. In my language we say "kurestwo" or "kurewstwo", which has the same register as "блядство".

Thanks! Курва, скурвиться in Russian could be related to that.
disagree Alexandra Taggart : President pays prostitutes?

As per my ignore policy, I'm not going to dignify this with a comment.

slutting
Peer comment(s):

neutral Alexandra Taggart : "excanging favours" is not slutting."A private place" - vodka always was there, it's how business was done during all Soviet years, don't say you know nothing about it!

here: low-down trick

All those carnal allusions, imho, are not relevant (neither understood) in English world.

Well, my version is not mandatory. I only object (strongly) against literal translation (whoring, prostitution) as inadequate. Except for allmighty "F..."

"Bacchanalia" is a bit too strong, though correct.
As British citizen and a person very much attached to Britain from childhood, I would always protect everything that is British, or of British name ( I mean Bono). Can I change my mind here by making the term softer? It would be better to put it - "exchanging favours".
