Discussion

Rachel Douglas Jan 18, 2019:
Nah... The only "grave" danger in either language is that science will be buried forever. But, back to the challenge at hand: With the same ease with which Russians concoct fields of research and dub them "X-логия", English-speaking researchers think up various types of "studies" (in the sense of a field of study, not only a particular study/исследование). "Post-feminist studies," "gender fluidity studies," "device interaction studies," etc. They all sound quite scientific and simultaneously, many of them, crazy.

The grave danger of Rachel's answer lies in its "face value" - it sounds sane and even scientific, as opposite to Scientology where the term itself should be considered a legally justified reason to institutionalize the followers.

Rachel, by all means, no pun intended.

The Misha Jan 18, 2019:
To be sure, this is junk pseudo-science promoted by the publish or perish mantra (talk about a different flavor of #metoo!). With this in mind, have you considered simply transliterating this gem as "vozzrenology" (or perhaps even "nozdreology," because who is really going to notice the difference?:)))) and then just continuing with the rest of the text as it gives the explanation of what that animal is. I mean, what's the point of inventing a soundbite for something that does not exist and that no one ever heard of, or even recycling an existing term that may evoke totally different references, as in that eating dirt and sand example Rachel has given?
Mark Vaintroub (asker) Jan 17, 2019:
:-)
IrinaN Jan 17, 2019:

worldview studies

Yikes! I don't know whether to put "I am guessing" (i.e., making this up) or "High" - because evidently many thousands of writers have used the phrase "worldview studies" - https://www.google.com/search?biw=864&bih=362&ei=kBZBXOnkPKP... Whether they mean the same thing Yuri Bokan means by it, I can't tell you. In any event, why not?

What are you going to do with "витасофия"? I was going to tell you that "vitasophy" has a long history, going back at least to a 1902 book, but it turns out that that volume said that the "distinctive feature" of "vitasophy," a system of belief popular in the city of St. Louis, was "the eating of dirt on sand, for the stomach's sake"! Other sources have it as the study of certain types of magic. Evidently lots of Germans like to write articles about "Vitasophie," also chiefly in connection with magic.
