Actually, thinking about it, your idea about the equation is very good, but I would slightly rephrase it:

\"leaves out of the equations\".

Почему-то мне этот оборот (тоже математический, кстати), больше по душе в Вашем контексте.
"Out of context" -значительно мягче будет. Вот "исключить" (неизвестное из уравнения), то есть забыть о нем - это уже ближе...

neutral Panchenko : мне кажется перевод не обязательно должен быть математическим только потому, что данное ходовое выражение в русском было заимствовано из математики. Но в любом случае - тоже приемлимый вариант.
