: chatting away. One HAS to be pretty fluent to be chatting away. Someone from Canada is likely either to be a native French speaker or to have studied it their whole life n school, so chatting away is excatly what they would be doing.

If you don't know the word "yak", just look it up, then comment.//Your orig comment doesn't show that. One meaning of "yakking" is "chatter" (speak rapidly), if you disagree for the sake of disagreeing, then it's just plain silly

You can only speak "rapid-fire" French if you're fluent, it would be the indirect way of demonstrating his fluency

Не уверена точно, как бы выразить то, что Вы хотите. Может что-то типа того. Или если контекст позволяет можно было бы свое слово какое-нибудь изобрести, например He was chatting in the fluentest French. Иногда это очень выручает в таких случаях.
