Russian term

смысловое пространство

Russian to English Social Sciences Psychology human evolution

The author has rendered this in English as "semantic space," but I don't think semantics has anything to do with it. It's more like the mental correlate of "physical space." Is there a good way to say that in nice, turgid, academic English?

Discussion

Susan Welsh (asker) Jul 20, 2018:
Still not sure Thanks everybody, but I really can't tell what is best. I decided to leave it as the authors had it and send a query. Another suggestion made from a colleague elsewhere was "meaning space," which googles pretty well. I told the authors all the suggestions I've considered, and if they respond I will record it here. It comes down to whether there is any difference between смысловое пространство and семантийеское пространство.// The author answered quickly: В психологии, как и в лингвистике, "семантический" и "смысловой" - это, действительно, разные термины. Первый термин ("семантический") связан со устоявшимся общепринятым "значением" чего-либо (например, понятия) для широкого круга людей, а второй термин - с "личным смыслом" чего-либо для того или иного индивида. В этой связи "semantic space" уместно заменить на "meaning space" or "conceptual space".
Turdimurod Rakhmanov Jul 20, 2018:
"perceptual space" It is "perceptual space"
or "meaningful space"
I think perceptual space works
The Misha Jul 19, 2018:
Or perceptual, perhaps? Seeing that there's physical reality and our subjective perceptions of it.

Oh, and I will spare you my usual diatribes about Russian academics. What's the point, you've heard them all:)
Susan Welsh (asker) Jul 19, 2018:
I'm not sure Yes, that's me. "Sense-making" seems to refer to a particular doctrine. I think "conceptual" works pretty well. At least it googles OK, demonstrating that when Russian academics use the term, they do not always mean "semantic." https://www.google.com/search?ei=hPVQW8f1HpCa_QaLzKv4BA&q="с...

Does this term differ from смыслообразующий?
I found it in Multitran, and I think one of the entries is yours:

Susan Welsh (asker) Jul 19, 2018:
It might Here's another one: Вследствие уникальности каждого человека, личные смысловые пространства «ассиметричны», то есть всегда содержат области, не имеющие взаимно однозначных смысловых соответствий.
Mikhail Kropotov Jul 19, 2018:
Would conceptual work?

space of perception

I just wondered if this has to do with Bertrand Russell's ideas as described here:
