Изначально, гопник - от гоп-гоп (hop-hop). Teenagers, may be ravers, who are fond of dancing techno, etc. (when the music goes hop-hop-hop). But here it could possibly mean usual teenagers who are interested in getting into their \"cool\" community, but are not realy welcome.

gop (aka gopnik) is a subculture type of the early 90's NIS: short haircut, some criminal activities (usually theft, racketeering), sports attire, hates "neformals", rap music, usually young. Different from serious/professional criminals. Most end up regular people...

: Perhaps. "Gopnik" - criminal, "gop so smykom" - criminal with shaved head, tattoos, gold rings etc. (Shlyakhov - Adler dictionary). But "gop/gopnik" seems to be used more generally for "yob/lout".

Вы ошибаетесь, точно так же, как гопник прежде означало "грабитель", hood уже давно означает просто "шпана" (кстати тоже когда-то означало "преступники"), чаще всего - группы молодежи из бедных районов, ищущие приключений, т.е. почти в точности гопники

the word is believed to have originated from St.Petersburg. There used to exist the so-called Городское общество прИзрения (kind of almshouse or hospice or charity organisation for the homeless, for the poor and so on), abbreviated as ГОП (GOP). The people who dwelt there were correspondingly called "gopniki". They had little scruples about robbing people to get some money. Hence the "gop-stop" - street robbery
