Russian term

в говно

Does that just mean “in the shit”, or is there a more specific, drug-related meaning? If it’s “in the shit”, the meaning is not really clear. Is it "felt rotten"? "on withdrawal"?

they were so intoxicated that were like shit themselves

the meaning of the expression - when you are drunk and on the ground there is no or a very little difference between you and this kind of stuff.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Espoc : not that at all. It's the level, not the negative connotation

this is one of the ways to describe the level and there is nothing negative in such description. ^-) (at least in this extract)

the meanigs is exactly the same as in your http://www.proz.com/kudoz/648875

though this is a more rude expression
however I believe that when these people communicate the level of rudeness doesn't matter :)

shit-faced

shit-faced

given the variants proposed here, how about an idiomatic equivalent?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Espoc : yes, but shit-faced usually refers to alcohol

perhaps you would prefer "stoned off our asses."
agree shlepakoff : True, but do we know if these guys are drunk or high?

stoned out of our minds

Since the exact drug is not specified, it is impossible to match the expression exactly. Stoned usually refers to hashish and marijuana, but variations are possible.
Peer comment(s):

agree Сергей Лузан : Conveys the idea as well IMHO.

pissed, bloody pissed, pissed as parrots

Употребляется, когда речь идет об интоксикации посредством алкоголя. Если русский термин подразумевает только наркотики, тогда это не совсем то. Но аналогия явно прослеживается...

totally wasted

as explained above it refers to the level of intoxication
Since it's not clear from the context whether they were taking drugs or drinking (or both) I think 'wasted' can be used to describe their condition (drunk and/or stoned) as it would fit both contexts and, as far as I know, is widely used to describe both alcohol and drug intoxication.
