To illustrate this use of \"posted\", which applies not only to officers, I can tell you what happened to me once.
I was an airman in the RAF in 1951, serving at an airfield in East Anglia. Suddenly, with no warning at all, I was \"posted\" to one in Cornwall, about 300 miles away. I left the first place on Saturday and had to be at the other one by Monday. So I just had time to nip home for a short weekend. I got to London by train, just happened to see an all-night bus running to my home town, got on, took a taxi for the last bit - along with all my kit and a bicycle, and arrived outside my hous about five in the morning, throwing gravel at the bedroom window and yelling out to my mother:
\"MUM! I\'VE BEEN POSTED!\"
