Sometimes I do outsource. But only to fellow colleagues I know and for whose work in the past promises success even this time... | | | i said reject | Sep 26, 2008 |
but not right off. If it's someone I like working for and it's a good contract, then I'll try and negotiate the deadline. If it's a 'not worth it' job that doesn't pay, or I know I can't handle it, then forget it. It doesn't happen that often that I get overloaded. | | | inkweaver Germany Local time: 14:02 French to German + ...
If the assignment is from a company I have worked for before that has proven its reliablity and I am interested in the project I will try and negotiate the deadline. If that is not possible I will do extra hours if at all possible (I have done it and will do it again, get up at 4 am etc.) If it is a new client with a good blue board rating I will also try and do it. I usually don't recommend a colleague unless i know the both parties well, that is ,the client has a good payment record and the colleague is capable for this job. | | | m_temmer Local time: 06:02 English to Dutch + ... depends on customer | Sep 26, 2008 |
If the translation comes from an agency, usually freelancers aren't even allowed to outsource. I think outsourcing is pretty much limited to direct customers. I only outsource work in other language combinations than mine. English isn't my mother tongue, so when a client wants something translated into English (or other language), I contact a native speaker for the job. | | | Rosa Cabral United States Local time: 08:02 English to Italian + ... negotiate or go without sleep! | Sep 26, 2008 |
I state ahead if I have other jobs going on and what my projected date/time by which I could be available or tell them to at least extend till evening instead of morning. If it is a good client I may just go without some sleep to try to get everything done. | | | Mariam Osmann Egypt Local time: 15:02 Member (2007) English to Arabic + ... This was one of the options I made for this question. I may reject, outsource, recommend but also negotiate deadline. I have several clients who negotiate deadline. When I reject the job I do it this way : Sorry I am busy, I am at your service for any proofreading work on : If It is rush, client won't wait, or sometimes like Rosa, sleepless days. Outsourcing: should let the client know first. But I have terrible experience with it, not only about bad translation but also... See more This was one of the options I made for this question.
