Will it be possible to propose a private forum for fully discussing the 7th Harry Potter book, and that too without having to worry about any spoilers? Naturally, the discussion will necessariliy be limited to those, who declare their having read the book.

I know what I am talking about. At the time of the sixth book, I did reveal the end in an ill-advised post, which was subsequently hidden. My ears were red with embarrassment. My only feeble defense was that it was a few days after the release of the book, and all the die-hard fans of Harry Potter would have read the book by that time. Nobody, including myself, accepted that excuse of course.

But the desire is great. I am sure that for the many people, who have already read the book, it will be really frustrating to be in such a binding position.

It is for that reason that I request Proz people to open a private forum for this purpose.

And I deliberately leave the off topic box unchecked.

N.Raghavan

I would say no Jul 23, 2007

as it is not within ProZ scope and is not language related.
But this is just my personal opinion.

I should say it is translation-related Jul 23, 2007

As is the general case with Harry Potter books, this book too will have been given to the various translators with very strict deadlines. Personally, I am interseted in the German and French versions. As I was reading the English original, I came across fantastic sentences, which I have been trying in vain to translate in my mind to German/French and failing miserably.

I have read two books in the German version (2nd and the 4th) and three in the French one (the first three). I found the translations retaining the charms of the original.

I would like to discuss with others as to how the various translators would be translating the same in their respective mother tongue.

Definitely yes Jul 23, 2007

Of course we should have a "spoiler forum" so the book can be discussed without reservation. This is the most translated commercial book and there is plenty to talk about regarding translation.

A discussion of the book's philosophy will inevitably lead to insight on translation, especially when discussed on Proz forums.

Of course, my opinion may be biased since I have two family members with the name of the Wizard Boy in question.

What about a thread in the Off Topic or Literature forum with a big nice BEWARE SPOILERS! in the topic title? That would prevent the die-hard Potter fans who still haven't had a chance to read the 7th book (me included) to read it. Or at least they would be aware of the consequences of doing so...

Best,
Eva

Then post a support ticket Jul 23, 2007

if you see this as a translation/language related topic, then it is within ProZ scope.
But I am not to decide on this matter.

That will be too cruel, Emoreda (your name sounds like a Hogwarts professor's)! Jul 23, 2007

Disclaimers notwithstanding, people tend to read such topics and become miserable afterwards thanks to spoilers. As such it will be kind to avoid this. Once a person deliberately declares that he/she has read the book and registers him/herself for coming into the forum, no disclaimer about spoilers is necessary of course.

I guess this request is a first of its kind, especially to discuss a particular book. All the more honor to Harry Potter.

I am filing a support ticket

I am touched dear Enrique! Jul 23, 2007

But an embarrassing question remains. How do I go about permitting people to access the newly created forum, when they ask me to include them in the list? Are there any special buttons provided for that purpose?

Anyhow, thank you very much in understanding the desires of die-hard Harry Potter fans like myself.

Regards,
N.Raghavan

A gratifyingly fast response Jul 23, 2007

Really fast response my dear Proz com staff. On behalf of

As fast as the ministry of magic owl coming for Harry Potter the moment he or Dobby did some underage magic.

But here the difference is that the private forum is a reward and the "owl" is quite welcome!

Now to take on the good work. I am opening a post in the private

Now to take on the good work. I am opening a post in the private forum. Those who want to join may please write to me.

But it will be advisable only if you have read the book, as the discussions will be a no-questions-barred one and the book will be turned upside down in the bargain.

I got one request through my profile page Jul 23, 2007

But I do not know how to proceed.

Is there any way I can add members just on their email to me through my profile page

or do they have to access http://www.proz.com/forum/368 and ask for permission?

In that case is there any automatic notification for me so that I can go to the relevant page and vet the request?

Kindly advise.

Regards,
N.Raghavan
