Ausgangstext - Englisch Op. 110
The Sonata Opus 110 was composed during the final months of 1821, and it is one of the rare compositions in which Beethoven inscribed the date of completion – the autograph score is dated 25 December, Christmas Day. It was written when Beethoven was finishing the Missa solemnis. Albeit unknown to what extent the mass influenced the sonata, the final movements of both works exhibit remarkable similarities in thematic material and structural devices. At the time Beethoven was immersed in religious feelings, so it could be argued the sonata’s message contains metaphysical elements.
In form and musical content, this sonata is highly unusual. Its audacious harmonic discourse and unusually large number of expressive markings distinguish this composition from the remaining Beethovenian pianistic oeuvre. A gentle first movement in sonata form is followed by a contrasting Allegro molto and Trio which is neither a Scherzo nor a March. The third movement is a hybrid structure alternating slow movements with fast fugal sections, and it consists of a recitative, Arioso dolente (Adagio ma non troppo), a fugue (Fuga – Allegro, ma non troppo), a reprise of the Arioso, and finally a return of the fugue. The structure of the final movement has no precedent in Beethoven’s earlier instrumental music. Its closest resemblance is to the Agnus Dei and ‘Dona nobis pacem’ of the Missa solemnis.
The sonata’s message of amiability, lamentation and spiritualized restoration has been interpreted in a homogeneous way by most commentators, probably owing to Beethoven’s detailed images throughout. William Meredith’s interpretation is of special interest:
In my reading, the question the sonata addresses and reflects on is one of how to deal with the loss of a person for whom one feels or felt great affection. […] The complexities of the last movement mirror the complex gamut of human reactions one feels when coming to terms with great loss. The two despairing sections seem to be balanced with two fugal sections, which represent the consolation of memory (or the struggle to remember) and the awakening of new life.
A glance into Beethoven’s life reveals loss – either through death or distance – has always been a companion since childhood. With this sonata, Beethoven could be conveying a message on how to deal with great loss.
It is very odd that such deeply personal work should bear no dedication. All of the most significant compositions from Beethoven’s final period contain a dedication except Op. 110. Studies have shown that he may have had reservations about dedicating this work. A careful look at evidence on Beethoven’s indecisiveness would infer an intentional lack of dedication, which in turn could imply he considered it too personal to dedicate.

Die Sonate op. 110 entstand in den letzten Monaten des Jahres 1821 und ist eine der wenigen Kompositionen Beethovens mit Fertigstellungsdatum – die Autographe zeigt das Datum des Weihnachtstags, den 25. Dezember. Zeitgleich stellte Beethoven auch die Missa solemnis fertig. Inwieweit dies die Sonate beeinflusste, ist nicht bekannt, jedoch weisen die Schlusssätze beider Werke hinsichtlich thematischem Material und Aufbau bemerkenswerte Ähnlichkeiten auf. Er war zu dieser Zeit ganz in religiöse Gefühle vertieft; somit könnte die Sonate also metaphysische Elemente vermitteln.
Außergewöhnlich sind Form und musikalischer Inhalt dieser Sonate. Der kühne harmonische Diskurs und die außergewöhnliche Vielzahl an Vortragsangaben unterscheidet diese Komposition von Beethovens anderen Klavierwerken. Dem sanften ersten Satz in Sonatenform folgt ein flottes Allegro molto mit Trio, irgendwo zwischen Scherzo und Marsch einzuordnen. Im dritten, hybriden, Satz wechseln langsame Abschnitte und schnelle Fugen einander ab: Rezitativ, Arioso dolente (Adagio ma non troppo), Fuge (Fuga – Allegro, ma non troppo), eine Wiederholung des Arioso, und schließlich eine Umkehr der Fuge. Eine ähnliche Komposition wie die des letzten Satzes findet sich in keiner von Beethovens früherer Instrumentalmusik. Am ehesten vergleichbar ist er mit dem Agnus Dei, und dabei dem „Dona nobis pacem“, der Missa solemnis.
Dass in der Sonate starke Gefühle von Trauer und spiritueller Widerherstellung zum Ausdruck kommen, darüber sind sich Musikkritiker weitgehend einig – vermutlich aufgrund Beethovens lebhafter Bildsprache. William Merediths Analyse ist hierbei von besonderem Interesse:
Meiner Ansicht nach befasst sich die Sonate mit der Frage, wie man mit dem Verlust einer vielgeliebten Person umgeht. […] Die Komplexität des letzten Satzes spiegelt die Komplexität der Gefühle, die wir angesichts des Verlusts empfinden, in ihrer gesamten Bandbreite wider. Den zwei tief depressiven Abschnitten stehen zwei Fugen gegenüber, welche die heilende Kraft der Erinnerung und das Erwachen neuen Lebens darstellen.
Ein Blick auf Beethovens Leben zeigt, dass Verlust – durch Tod oder Entfernung – seit Kindheitstagen ein ständiger Begleiter war. Möglicherweise vermittelt uns Beethoven mit dieser Sonate, wie man einen schweren Verlust bewältigen kann.
Was verwundert ist, dass ein derartig persönliches Stück keine Widmung hat. Alle bedeutenden Kompositionen aus Beethovens Spätphase wurden jemandem gewidmet, nur op. 110 nicht. Studien zufolge könnte er Bedenken gehabt haben, diese Sonate zu widmen. Genau betrachtet weist Beethovens Unentschlossenheit darauf hin, dass er bewusst keine Widmung verfasste. Vermutlich erachtete er das Stück als zu persönlich dafür.
