I am looking for a user-downloadable repository which would offer an easy to way to download the Hunspell spell checking dictionaries for the various supported languages and language variants. Does anybody know where to find such a repository?

I do not think that there is a single repository where you can get all up-to-date Hunspell dictionaries. If you are interested in a particular language, better go to the respective project site (example: Grammalecte for French).

I have found also this one, with fairly updated Hunspell spell checking dictionaries: https://www.freeoffice.com/en/download/dictionaries
The .sox format can be decompressed the same way as a ZIP file (at least on my GNU/Linux machine).
