Hello,
reacently we started to work in Transit XV. We understand the basic work and we finished a few projects. Now, our project manager wants that we use the previous projects as a reference material. How can we do this?

If you have a paid version of Transit, you can add projects and directories as reference material to you current project in the project settings.
If you work with the Satellite version, then copy you old projects to a subdirectory of your working directory of the new project.
If your customer wants you to use the old projects, s/he should actually incorporate him/herself the reference material to be used...

Here you can add projects (and include, if you wish, the references used in these projects), or folders or individual files.

I did that and added a previous project as a reference. But, what happens now? I added the reference, but in the previous project, nothing happens, why? What is the purpose of the reference material and how does it work? Is is connected with the fuzzy index? How can I achive that the fuzzy index takes files from the previous projects?

If you accepted defaults, you have probably checked "minimum segment status for fuzzy match" and the option "translated" selected (in the "Fuzzy index" tab when you go Options-Profile-Settings).
This is fine and should be left this way - just make sure it is so.
Now, go File-Open-Language Pair; in the dialog box "Open Language pair..." , push the "Browse" button; select and open the reference file(s) you want to use. At this point, be sure that the window with th... This is fine and should be left this way - just make sure it is so.
Now, go File-Open-Language Pair; in the dialog box "Open Language pair..." , push the "Browse" button; select and open the reference file(s) you want to use. At this point, be sure that the window with the desired file is active, and go Options - File Status, click on Translated.
It is better to go through this before importing your project, because this way the reference materials are used in the importing (meaning that they are used for pretransaltions, if your settings admit pretranslating).
Antoher point: when you create a new project and select the option "create a new project based on", the old project you take as the "base" is automatically included in the new project (well, unless you change the settings to prevent this process) as its reference material, which saves you the above-mentioned work.

Your translation is composed of language pair files. These files, located in your project folder, are at the same time the files you're working on for translation, but can be used as reference material for a new project.

Example. You want to translate file hello.doc from english into italian.
When you import it into transit two language pair files are created:
hello.eng (containing source text)
hello.ita (where your translation will be saved)
You complete the translation, export the project and get your hello.doc file translated.
If, at a later stage, you want to translate the file "hello update"
you create a new project, select Project\Settings\Reference material, and add the directory where the previous language pair files are located.
After applying this settings, you can import the file "hello update".
all 100% matches will be automatically pre-translated
all fuzzy matches will not be translated but will be suggested in the fuzzy index window.
