Denominazioni internazionali: Althea root, * marshmallow root *, guimauve, Eibisch.
Erba perenne, ricca di folta peluria che conferisce un aspetto vellutato, alta fino 1,5 m, con foglie trilobate con margine crenato, fiori rosati grandi circa 3 cm raccolti in infiorescenze peduncolate. Cresce nei luoghi umidi e paludosi; originaria dell'Europa, è naturalizzata negli USA dal Massachusetts alla Virginia, ma si trova anche altrove in zone ristrette. La parte preferita è costituita dalle radici scorticate, raccolte in autunno, ma si trovano in commercio anche la radice intera essiccata e le foglie essiccate.
