French term

carnet d'artiste

French to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Resources used by artists
As far as I can make out, this is the kind of 'scrapbook' artists in various fields sometimes use to store ideas for possible future use (not always their own, of course!).
I'm pretty sure there's a standard term used for this, but I'm blowed if I can remember it now! Something like a 'snatch book' or 'grab book'... but neither of those is the actual term I've seen.
In my case, this is simply in a list of things that might be published by an art gallery — I get the impression it is not referring to either and artist's sketch book, or a volume about the artist and their work.

Discussion

Tony M (asker) Mar 28, 2022:
TO ALL Thanks you all so much for your insights and ideas, and several interesting references.
I was bugged by this, so ended up asking the customer to be more specific, and it turns out that this is more like, as David Vaughn mentioned re: Da Vinci, a book with ideas and sketches both directly and indirectly related to a specific work, as well as some details from it; but also containing notes by the artist themselves, as well as background information about them, their other works, etc. — so I needed to use a fairly all-embracing term that would bear repetition in an otherwise fairly dry document.
Mpoma Mar 22, 2022:
Leonardo I tend to agree with David. In art historical terms, perhaps the most interesting such booklets tend to be those of, for example, Da Vinci. Usually, in art historical terms, these are indeed referred to in English as "notebooks". They contain sketches, etc. but also ideas about art, philosophy, helicopters, etc. They are the kind of things that would be worth publishing.

You'll note that, rather cheekily, Helen S has covered all the bases, using 3 different terms for her answer.

I'm intrigued by this "grab book" idea. I racked my brain thinking what you might have in mind... a blank.
David Vaughn Mar 20, 2022:
@Tony Since you have reason to believe this is not a sketch pad, it seems quite possible this is simply a "notebook", with the mention "d'artiste" simply to establish it is of the artist being shown, and not someone else.
Tony M (asker) Mar 20, 2022:
@ Helene Thank you for your contribution, but do please note, 'carnet d'artiste' is quite definitely my source term, and as used in this context, is a publication, nothing to do with their 'sphere'.
Tony M (asker) Mar 20, 2022:
TO ALL Important extra context!
I've just discovered this is specifically SWISS French!
Helene Carrasco-Nabih Mar 20, 2022:
"carnet de croquis" / "carnet d'esquisses" "carnet de croquis" / "carnet d'esquisses" = functional = equipment for an artist
"carnet d'artiste" = refers to the type of activity = artistic sphere

HTH I think the question is intended to be Fr->En maybe,

If it's something like this:
https://sd87f116598123549.jimcontent.com/download/version/14...
https://sites.ac-nancy-metz.fr/arts-plastiques/wp-content/up...

then it could be:
artist’s notebook
https://www.kildare.ie/ArtsService/PressReleases/ArtDocument...
sketchbook might be too restrictive if there are notes or collage.
or something like an art diary/art journal depending on context and usage.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_diary
Tony M (asker) Mar 20, 2022:
@ Florence Thanks, but sorry, I posted the language pair the wrong way round by mistake!

Just a cordial suggestion among many others.

Well, I don't think ''notebook'' and ''artiste notebook'' are two quite identical answers, sorry./Implying something isn't at all the same thing as declaring it through a unique and clear, titled answer.

carnet de croquis

"carnet de croquis" est plus idiomatique que "carnet d'artiste". Je suis également peintre et critique d'art (>>https://www.instagram.com/carrasconabih/)
Note from asker:
Merci, Hélène ! En l'occurrence, le client m'a donné des informations complémentaires, et en effet, ici, c'est bien plus que juste a 'sketch book'
Peer comment(s):

neutral Helen Shiner : Yes, this is the more informal term for artist’s sketchbook

sketchbook / pocket book / notebook

I think the generic term would be ‘sketchbook’ - they come in all sizes: https://artdiscount.co.uk/collections/paper-and-pads Here is a show featuring artists’ sketchbooks:
https://sassalog.wordpress.com/tag/procion-dye-drawing/

Smaller ones could also be termed notebooks or pocket sketchbooks.

Here is the famous carnet de Nina Kandinsky: https://www.centrepompidou.fr/en/recherche/oeuvres?ensemble=... which she evidently used as a sort of visitors’ book, since it contains sketches and small drawings/paintings by assorted artists. I include this here in particular to demonstrate the size of her sketchbook/s.

Note from asker:
Thanks a lot, Helen! Your insights and ref. were most helpful. Further details from the client confirmed that this was indeed a book with notes both by and about the artist. I've had to award the points to another answer, as that is the term I ended up actually using — but your onput is much appreciated!

artist's doodle pad

'...a list of things that might be published by an art gallery ' .... as well as kept in an art librar or wielded by (self-absorbed) art students in art galleries and museums whom visitors have to waeve around.

Roughwork in math(s) also comes to mind,

Artist's ideas - pace our artistic experts - perhaps tips the translation away from an artist's sketch to a doodling *pad*.
Example sentence:

Sketch out your ideas quickly and easily with this A3 Quick Rough Sketch Pad, the ideal medium for any sketch artist! Each page is smooth and soft, ideal surfaces for pencil

Bordered Pages for Sketching, Drawing, Doodling and Creating your Ideas.

Note from asker:
Thanks, Adrian! I like 'doodle pad' — reminds me of my parents always going on about the 'doodle bugs' in the War! However, as the client subsequently informed me, this contains notes both by and also about the artist, so I felt another, less informal term was more suitable in this instance.

"a pad of paper used for jotting down ideas, informal notes, preliminary writing, etc."
Note from asker:
Thanks a lot, Jennifer! It turns out this book was a bit more than just that, as it contained notes both by and also about the artist.
