ZT-Translations Feb 7, 2023:
Actually, the idea of a bilateral commitment or promise does exist as well. Here are a few links on the matter:

Mark Robertson Feb 4, 2023:
@Teresa The promissory employment contract has the same structure as an employment contract and contains all essential terms of the contract promised. It is not a commitment or letter of intent because it is bilateral.

The following link explains how these contracts work and even provides a draft of a promissory employment contract.

Mario Freitas Feb 4, 2023:
@ Teresa In that case, instead of "promise" or "commitment", you could use "letter of intent", but aggreements with indefinite contractual terms in English are still "open-ended agrements"
Teresa Goncalves (asker) Feb 2, 2023:
@philgoddard. The person (future employee) has not entered the country yet. It is basically a promise letter.
philgoddard Feb 2, 2023:
Is this just an ordinary employment contract? Why does it say promessa?

Identificação, assinatura e sede da entidade empregadora;
Identificação, assinatura e domicílio da contraparte (o futuro trabalhador);
Declaração onde o promitente (aquele que promete) se obrigue a celebrar o referido contrato de trabalho;

Promise of Work Contract for an Unknown Period of Time

Encontrei isto:

Working for an employer – one of the following documents:
Work contract; or,
Promise of work contract; or,
Declaration by employer confirming the labour link.

open-ended employment contract commitment/promise

Termo incerto = prazo indeterminado = open-ended agreement

Indefinite employment contract commitment

Preliminary Agreement of Employment for a Term Uncertain

In descending order of CL / confidence level 5-4-3-2, but not necessarily of accuracy, my main doubt being why no one else has picked up on the preliminary agreement / promesa vs. fixed contract point. It is borne out in the ProZ web refs., even though the second one is my own suggested answer.

The example sentence refers to an unceratin term. In my 'day', it used to be called employment for a term uncertain, though not many g/hits for the purpose.
Example sentence:

The duration of temporary employment contracts for a fixed or uncertain portugalglobal.pt La duración del contrato de trabajo temporal, de duración cierta o incierta
