Thank you, Ilan. I would be most grateful for any reference to Oxford/Merriam-Webster/Macmillan/Collins or any other reputable dictionary stipulating that 'conventional'/'nominal'/'arbitrary' must be considered as 'not natural in English'.|Your choice.
agree Igor Andreev : имхо, ближе всего по смыслу arbitrary - произвольно выбранная единица измерения, по аналогии с arbitrary units / ->З.Ы. да, я злой, потому что начитался такого достаточно, ну и сам с такого начинал, было... ) Спасибо - нашлись люди, объяснили по молодости

agree Rachel Douglas : With "standard," not the others. I think it would be more helpful to the asker, if you were to select and justify just one or two proposals, rather than give a whole thesaurus-like list.
